Fellowships - General information
The Real Colegio Complutense offers fellowships to Spanish university faculty and graduate students for research and post-degree studies providing access to programs and academic activities offered by Harvard University, in all the areas of knowledge.
In order to be eligible for one of these fellowships an applicant must first be admitted in one of programs or departments at Harvard University. The Real Colegio can help and advise on the different steps of the admission process. If it is necessary, RCC can identify useful necessary contacts.
If interested, an applicant can request a fellowship or assistance from the Real Colegio Complutense, by following the instructions of the annual call for grants. This request must be presented in parallel with the request to Harvard University for admission to a program or departments.
Calls for grants 2006-2007
Fellowships and partial grants for post-degree studies at Harvard
Fellowships and partial grants are available to a person with a BA, MA, MD or BS, as well as to engineers and architects, who have studied in Spanish universities. Applicants need to complete the request to participate in a program for graduate students offered in the Faculties or Schools of Harvard University for them to obtain a Masters or a Doctorate in. PhD candidates whose dissertation is in an advanced state, who wish to take some courses at Harvard University, and who want to use its libraries, can also apply for these fellowships as “Visiting Fellows” or “Special Students”.
The applications for fellowships of the Real Colegio have to be presented every year from September to the beginning of December. Spanish candidates admitted to a postgrade program of Harvard University can send their applications until April 15. In any case, fellowships can be granted only to candidates who previously have been accepted in one of the Harvard Programs for graduate students, or as “Visiting Fellows” or “Special Students” in one of the Departments of Harvard.
Harvard University, through the "Committee on General Scholarships," determines the amount of the scholarship (based on the economic need of the grantee) and administers it. It is possible also to apply for partial assistance from the Real Colegio to augment other funding sources.
Persons linked to the Universidad Complutense de Madrid or to the universities which have signed an agreement with the UCM (presenting a letter of endorsement with the application) have preference. However, persons who are not in that situation can also apply for fellowships.
Fellowships and office space for research at Harvard
The Real Colegio Complutense offers fellowships and office space especially oriented to professors and doctors from the UCM and of the Spanish universities which have signed an agreement with the UCM. Fellowships are for developing a three to twelve month research project. Professors and doctors from other universities and Spanish institutions can also apply. All of these applications will be considered only after having evaluated the needs of the candidates from the UCM and from universities with signed agreements.
An essential requirement for receiving a fellowship from the Real Colegio is admission of the investigator as a "Visiting Scholar" or "Visiting Researcher" by one of the Harvard University Departments, such as the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences or by another Harvard School or Center. We recommend that applicants contact directly Harvard specialists who work in the field of their research project. The Real Colegio can help, if it is necessary, establish these types of contact.
Researchers with other funds and PhD candidates that have almost completed their dissertation, can apply for an office space without funding.
Short term visitors (one week to three months) can gain access to libraries of Harvard University through the Real Colegio Complutense’s agreement with the main library, "Widener Library," and with other Harvard libraries. Information and letters for these short duration visits must be requested and obtained in person at the office of the Real Colegio in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In principle, there is no financial help from the Real Colegio for these short term academic visits. Researchers from universities without an agreement with UCM can use the premises of the Real Colegio (when space is available) for a small fee.
Fellowships for groups of advanced research
Every year, the Real Colegio Complutense welcomes a group of advanced researchers of high quality, who work on a common general subject, as is usual in institutes of advanced studies. The groups are formed by eight to ten researchers. The researchers may come from diverse disciplines and Spanish or foreign universities or research centers. They commit themselves to work on the common general subject, while developing their own personal project of investigation. They also participate in seminars with distinguished guests from Harvard University and from other American academic institutions. The 2008 group invitation call will be published in September 2006.
Fellowships Cátedra Garrigues
As a result of the Agreement of Collaboration between the Garrigues Foundation and the UCM, we have published the call for special fellowships “Cátedra Garrigues - Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard" to carry out research projects in subjects of interest for both parties. They want to facilitate the formation of young professors and attorneys through research projects on legal topics, in particular the legal organization of companies.
Fellowships are open to young professors and professionals in the practice of the Law, who are either of Spanish nationality or have studied in a Spanish university.
Fellowships of the Consejo Social of the UCM
The purpose of this call for Fellowships and research projects is to help professors of the UCM who have a PhD carry out an investigation project (not leading to any degree) in the areas of Sciences, Humanities, Law, Medicine, Public Health, Political and Economic Sciences, Sociology, Education, Architecture, or another subject recognized by a center at Harvard University.
Summer grants for students of Harvard
Following the tradition of many centers at Harvard University, the Real Colegio Complutense offers small grants for short terms visits related to research in Spain. Graduate and undergraduate students of Harvard University and Radcliffe who would like to collect data for their research project or develop academic contacts with institutions working in their field are eligible. The projects must be part of the work of their investigation or thesis; be supervised by a professor or a Department of Harvard University; and be related to Spanish topics (or Spain as a part of Europe or the Latin American community).
