"Do Competition Rules Apply to the Agricultural Sector
in the European Union?"
Patricia Lamo de Espinosa Rocamora, Spanish
Ombusdman's office
Summary:
Fair and undistorted competition is a cornerstone
of a market economy in the European Union. The European Commission was
vested with the powers necessary to oversee and enforce EU competition
law to ensure effective competition in the internal market.
European law regulates the internal market in the
antitrust area through some prohibition rules set for in the Treaty on
Functioning of the European Union.
The Treaty also establishes a common policy in the
sphere of agriculture and fisheries. In order to implement the
objectives of this agriculture policy, the Treaty establishes the
predominance of agriculture rules over competition.

"English Deism in the Early Enlightenment"
Maria Lara Martínez,
UNED
Summary:
Deism is a philosophical and religious
belief that a Supreme Being created the universe, and that
this can be determined using reason, without a need for
either faith. Contrary to Jewish, Christian, Islamic and
other theistic religions, Deists tend to reject the divine
interventions in human affairs. Deism became prominent in
the 17th and 18th centuries during the
Enlightenment in the United Kingdom, France, Ireland and
United States.
In this lecture, we will explain
the life and the thought of the freethinkers, an epithet
applied to the English Deists of the 17th and 18th
centuries who argued for natural as contrasted to revealed
religion. John Toland (Christianity Not Mysterious: A
Treatise Shewing, That there is nothing in the Gospel
Contrary to Reason, Nor Above It: And that no Christian
Doctrine can be properly called A Mystery, 1696),
Anthony Collins (Discourse of Free-thinking, 1713),
and Matthew Tindal (Christianity as Old as the Creation,
1730) are among the key early freethinkers.
March 11, 7:30 pm
"Comparative
Political Campaign Strategy: USA and Spain"
Eduardo Baeza,
Universidad San Pablo CEU (Spain),
Summary:
There are over 500,000 elected officials in
the United States. Each one of them has run a winning campaign at any
given level. Campaign management in the US has become highly
professionalized, with the usage of sophisticated messaging and
targeting tools that help the candidate deliver a more effective message
to voters. This practical lecture will focus on the key methods used by
US campaigners that can later be adapted to the peculiarities of the
Spanish electoral system.
